These are some questions that tend come up about the Weight Loss by Gina supplements. We particularly recommend taking the time to read through the FAQ if you are someone with medical conditions or are currently taking any medications and you would like to to start the supplements. 


General Questions

1. Do I need to take all the supplements recommended by Gina? You do not need to take any/all of the recommended supplements to be successful on the Weight Loss by Gina program. They are recommended because these are basic supplements that Gina has found - in her experience as a weight loss expert - help speed the weight loss progress. 

2. Are there particular brands to purchase? Choosing the right dose and format is more important than brand. The supplements offered in our Weight Loss collection were chosen by our team of pharmacists because they support weight loss and are cost effective options. 

3. Will the supplements cause interactions? That really depends on your health profile and what medication you are currently taking. If you are concerned, you can make an appointment with our virtual pharmacist to go over your current medications or you can speak with your physician. 

4. When should I take my supplements? Probiotic is best taken on an empty stomach, approximately 30 minutes before breakfast. Vitamin D and Omega 3 are best taken with food. For everything else, you want to follow package directions. If the directions don't specify then you can take them at any time. The most important thing is to be consistent. 

5. How long do I need to take the supplements for? It is recommended you take the supplements for the duration of the program and while you are still wanting to lose weight. It is up to you whether you decide to continue to take them after you have lost all the weight you wanted to lose.

There is a maintenance benefit to continuing to take a probiotic, vitamin D3 and omega 3 post-weight loss. Make an appointment with our virtual pharmacist or speak to your doctor if you have any additional questions.

6. Should I introduce all the supplements at once? For the majority of people, it is fine to add all the supplements at once. However, if you are a highly reactive person (multiple sensitives and/or allergies), it is recommended to introduce them one at a time at 1-2 week intervals.

7. Do I need to take the secondary supplements? The secondary supplement list is for members who are interested in taking things to the next level when it comes to health and wellness. That may mean you want to try them all, you want to try just one or two, or you want to stick with the basics.

8. I was already taking supplements prior to starting the program. Can I continue to take them and add the recommended ones from the program? We recommend you keep taking any supplements that were recommended to help treat an ailment or condition by a healthcare provider.


Questions about the Essential Box Supplements

1. How many omega 3 capsules should I take per day? Start with the recommended amount on the bottle. A minimum of 250–500 mg combined EPA and DHA is recommended each day for healthy adults. However, higher amounts are often recommended for certain health conditions. 

2. How much vitamin D3 should I take per day? 1,000 to 2,500 IU per day of vitamin D from a supplement is generally safe, should help people achieve an adequate blood level of vitamin D, and may have additional health benefits. 

3. What is the difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3? Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is the vegan form of vitamin D, i.e. it is comes from plant sources. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is found in animal food sources, such as egg yolk, fish oil, liver, and butter. Vitamin D3 is better for raising your body's Vitamin D levels. 

4. How much CALM magnesium should I take? Start with the recommended instructions on the bottle. You can increase the dose based on your needs. 

5. Can I take magnesium citrate capsules instead of CALM magnesium? It is not recommended. Magnesium citrate is more absorbable in liquid form. 

6. I currently take magnesium bisglycinate. Can I take this instead of CALM Magnesium? Magnesium bisglycinate works differently than magnesium citrate. It would be more beneficial to take CALM Magnesium while doing the program. If your healthcare provider has recommended you take magnesium glycinate for a different issue, you can take them both while doing the program.

7. Can I take collagen capsules instead of collagen powder? It is not recommended since you would need to take many capsules to get the same dose you would get from one scoop of powder. 

8. Which collagen powder is better - marine or bovine? Both bovine and marine collagen provide similar benefits. They are great for skin, hair, gut and bone health. Marine collagen is obviously a better choice for those that don't eat cow products. 

9. Can I take both marine collagen and bovine collagen? Absolutely - again, the most important thing is to be taking the collagen and being consistent with it.

10. Do I need to take both a prebiotic and a probiotic? Probiotics are live microorganisms that support our microbiome when consumed. These gut-friendly bacteria help support the body’s immune response by stimulating immune cells needed to fight infection, and have been shown to be beneficial for several gastrointestinal conditions, including digestion issues. Probiotics are found naturally in certain foods, but the amount is minimal, which is why a probiotic supplement is suggested. 

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are food fibres that promote the growth and activity of the beneficial bacteria in our gut. Since the digestive system cannot break down prebiotics, they arrive in the colon and serve as food for the residing probiotics. Prebiotics are more than just food for probiotics; they also confer benefits to our health by selectively altering our gastrointestinal microflora composition and activity. 

It is up to you whether you want to take either or both of these supplements. They are highly recommended by Gina for the Weight Loss Group Program.

11. What is a “Gutsmart ”? Gutsmart is a source of probiotics and prebiotic fibre. It contains 2 billion CFU whole-cell probiotics to promote a favourable gut flora and aids in digestive health.

The suggested use for adults: mix 1 scoop (6 g) into 250 ml of any non-carbonated beverage of your choice or water. 

12. Can I take digestive enzymes instead of the digestive bitters if I have issues with digestion? In Gina’s experience, the digestive bitters are preferred for her weight loss program. 

13. How long do I need to take the supplements for? It is recommended you take the supplements for the duration of the program and while you are still wanting to lose weight. It is up to you whether you decide to continue to take them after you have lost all the weight you wanted to lose.

Questions about the Secondary Box Supplements

1. Do I need to take the secondary supplements? The secondary supplement list is for members who are interested in taking things to the next level. That may mean you want to try them all, you want to try just one or two, or you want to stick with the basics.

2. Can I use turmeric as a spice instead of adding it in as a supplement? Turmeric (curcumin) supplements are commonly taken to help recovery after physical exercise or high activity and may also help support joint health. As a spice in powdered form, turmeric yields only about 3% of curcuminoids, as opposed to some turmeric supplements that contain up to 95% curcuminoids.

That’s not to say that cooking with turmeric is not beneficial to your health, however, if you want maximum impact, a supplement offers a much richer concentration of curcuminoids.

3. Are there any people who should not consume turmeric? Concentrated or high strength turmeric should be taken with caution by anyone on the chemotherapy drugs cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin, as well as anyone on anticoagulant drugs, such as apixaban (Eliquis), dabigatran (Pradaxa), edoxaban (Lixiana), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and warfarin (Coumadin).

4. What is the benefit of taking L-Theanine? L-theanine is an amino acid analogue found in green tea. In humans, L-theanine has been reported to provide beneficial effects on mental state and sleep quality. Sleep deprivation or chronic sleep disorders are associated with an elevated risk of various diseases, such as depression, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and can lead to a poor quality of life. Unlike conventional sleep inducers, L-theanine is not a sedative but promotes good quality of sleep and relaxation.

5. When is the best time to take L-Theanine? Take 1 tablet of L- theanine at night, before bedtime. 

6. What Is the Difference Between Vitamin B12 and B Complex? Vitamin B12 is one of the eight B vitamins that form the Vitamin B complex.

In a B Complex supplement, the set of eight B vitamins are represented in the optimum balance to provide the recommended daily amount. All B vitamins are water-soluble and cannot be stored by the body, so a good daily intake of all of them is needed. You cannot ‘overdose’ on the B vitamins as your body will simply excrete what you don’t need or use. 

7. What vitamins are in Vitamin B Complex? These are the eight B complex vitamins:

  1. Vitamin B1 or thiamine
  2. Vitamin B2 or riboflavin
  3. Vitamin B3 or niacin or nicotinic acid
  4. Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid
  5. Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine, pyridoxal or pyridoxamine
  6. Vitamin B7 or biotin
  7. Vitamin B9 or folic acid
  8. Vitamin B12 or cobalamins such as cyanocobalamin or methyl-cobalamin

Seven of the eight B complex vitamins (but not Vitamin B12) are found in:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Root vegetables
  • Peppers
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Whole grains

Studies have shown the importance of B-group vitamins in the maintenance of brain health in healthy adults and they may have important implications in the prevention and alleviation of disease and disability. If you are at risk for low B-group vitamins because of diet and/or disease, taking a supplement is suggested.

8. How common is Vitamin B12 deficiency? Deficiency in Vitamin B12 is the most common Vitamin B deficiency as it is not found in plant food sources. Unsurprisingly, vegetarians and vegans have the highest risk of not getting enough each day. If you do not eat a lot of meat or B12 fortified foods (these are often breads, cereals and energy bars which are NOT on Gina's food plan) then a B12 supplement would likely be beneficial.

9. How much vitamin B12 should I take? Vitamin B12 supplementation depends on a variety of factors, such as age, biological gender, and deficiency. A good starting dose for those who need supplementation would be 500 mcg to 1000 mcg daily. You can have your vitamin B12 levels checked by your physician.

10. What is Adrenasmart? Adrenasmart is a blend of adaptogens used for adrenal support. Adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both kidneys. Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions.

The adrenal glands are impacted by everyday stressors, which come into our environment in a myriad of ways such as lifestyle. Individuals experiencing stress, having difficulty concentrating, and/or experiencing fatigue may benefit from taking Adrenasmart. 

11. What is an adaptogen? An adaptogen is a molecule that boosts your body’s ability to adapt to and avoid damage caused by physical, chemical, or biological stressors. Examples of stressors include environmental pollution, climate change, radiation, and infectious diseases.

Adaptogens are thought help with stress by acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — also known as your central stress response system — thereby regulating the stress response of your body’s cells. 

12. Are there any special precautions or warnings related to Adrenasmart? Yes! There are certain populations that should not use Adrenasmart or only use it under the supervision of a physician. If any of the following apply to you, speak to your healthcare provider before using Adrenasmart: 

  • Pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Have an autoimmune disease
  • On immunosuppressive therapy
  • Currently take other natural health products with stimulant properties
  • Have severe liver or kidney disease
  • Have epilepsy
  • Have gastroesophageal reflex disease (GERD) or peptic ulcers
  • Have high brain (intracranial) pressure
  • Have a thyroid disorder or take thyroid medications
  • Currently use medication(s) changed by the liver, including celecoxib (Celebrex), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diclofenac (Voltaren), diltiazem (Cardizem), fluvastatin (Lescol), estrogens, glipizide (Glucotrol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), indinavir (Crixivan), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), lovastatin (Mevacor), phenytoin (Dilantin), piroxicam (Feldene), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), tolbutamide (Tolinase), torsemide (Demadex), triazolam (Halcion), and warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Currently use the medication tacrolimus (Prograf)
